Executive Function
What is Executive Function?
Executive functioning (EF) is a term used to describe the actions we direct towards ourselves to attain a future goal. There are 7 major components of EF and they all sequentially develop over time as humans mature. For some, there is dysfunction in the regulation and cuing of these actions. Executive dysfunction can be present on its own as well as play a major role for those with ADHD, ASD and anxiety.

The EF Symphony
Think of EF as a conductor of a symphony. EF communicates and cues the cognitive processes to come on line and do their job. As a parent, you might think of EF as using a planner, keeping homework organized or even knowing how much time homework will take to complete. However, there are a host of executive functions that have to be at the ready to insure those tasks are possible. These functions may need direct and explicit support before planners, binders and a homework plan can be incorporated into the child's day.
