Auditory & Phonemic Assessment

An assessment at the Listening Connection involves 3 important steps. It can cover a wide range of skills and is centered on the the concerns and needs of the individual.  Scroll down to find out details on each step.

1. Let's Chat

This appointment provides you with an opportunity to meet Dr. Davis and she will discuss your concerns. It can be over the phone or on Zoom. At that time, you can share medical and academic history as well as any other relevant information about your child. The best plan of action and what testing needs to be completed can then be decided. A full assessment at our office likely will not be needed if a psychoeducational evaluation has been completed recently.

Please note: This will be a parent only meeting.

2. Let's Assess

All testing will be conducted at our Peachtree Corners office.

Assessments can range from 2 to 4 hours in length, depending on the needs and age of the individual. The evaluation portion can be spread between several appointments.

We hear with the ears and listen with the brain! Even when hearing tests reveal normal findings, the brain can still struggle to process auditory information in an effective way. Our testing challenges the auditory processing pathway, checking for weaknesses.

It will then move on to assess auditory discrimination abilities, determine phonemic and decoding skills, and then check listening comprehension. Testing concludes at the higher up, intra-individual reading skills level: fluency, rate and accuracy.

Such a thorough assessment allows a glimpse into the specific areas and pathways that may need intervention.

3. Let's Make A Plan

Dr. Davis will review the findings of the assessment with you via Zoom or in person at our Peachtree Office location.

The sum of all administered tests gives us a glimpse of your child's decoding, integration, prosodic and phonemic abilities. The goal is to provide evidence based, deficit specific and patient centered intervention should it be warranted. These assessments help determine which skill areas are affected and need to be the focus of remediation.
